Ruddington Grange ladies are 2015 Champions

WENDY KERRY needed acupuncture on a frozen shoulder just to be able to play in finals week at the Daily Mail Foursomes.

But last night she was putting the injury to the test by lifting the women’s trophy at the Marriott Forest of Arden.

Wendy and her Ruddington Grange partner Loraine Howd beat Mickleover’s Debbie Deakin and Shelley Woodward 4&3 in a Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire final rivalry, then quipped: “Beware the injured golfer.”

Wendy, 51, who is due to have an operation on her shoulder next month, was celebrating earlier in the year after achieving her first hole in one at Chilwell in the foursomes third round.

But she said last night; “This is much better than that. This is special because it is shared.”

It was the third time Wendy and Debbie had crossed swords in various competitions this year, and the honours had been even before the foursomes final. So Wendy got the upper hand in every sense at the Marriott Forest of Arden.

Debbie, 38, a former Derbyshire champion and captain, and Shelley, 37, had finally ended the epic journey of retired Parkland pair Kath Morpeth and Denise Swindlehurst after another marathon in the semi-final, which finished at the 19th hole. The Parklands pairing had played 57 holes in three games over a day and a half.

But Wendy and Loraine, 44, reeled off four wins in five holes from the eighth to set up the final win.

The Ruddington Grange pair had ended the hopes of Leigh’s Nikki Martin and Heather Pirrie in the morning semi-finals.

Nikki, 39, who played in Shropshire’s second team before moving to the Greater Manchester area, and Heather, 52, had seen off two pairs of former finalists in the previous day’s round of 16 and quarter-finals.
But they succumbed 3&2 to the Ruddington Grange women.

Women’s semi-finals: Ruddington Grange (Loraine Howd and Wendy Kerry, 21) beat Leigh (Nikki Martin and Heather Pirrie, 22) 3&2; Mickleover (Debbie Deakin and Shelley Woodward, 17) bt Parklands (Kath Morpeth and Denise Swindlehurst, 44) at the 19th. Final: Ruddington Grange bt Mickleover 4&3.
