Mendip men are 2015 Champions

Daily Mail
20 Oct 2015

James Popham and Simon Grant broke the East Midlands stranglehold on the last day of this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes as they lifted the men’s trophy after a 3&2 victory over Cosby’s Luke Burrows and Matt Peyton.

The Cosby pairing, who both play in Leicestershire’s second team, were level par when beating Broke Hill’s Phillip Turnbull and Shaun Welch
3&1 in the morning semi-final at the Marriott Forest of Arden.

And they looked like maintaining that form when Luke, 23, rolled in a curling, 20-foot birdie putt on the first hole of the final.

But mistakes at the second and third followed by another birdie at the fourth evened out the contest and let the pairing from the Mendip club back into the match..

James, a former Somerset county player, rolled in a six-foot birdie putt to win the 10th but Simon found water at the 11th to leave the match all square again.

However, the Mendip pairing won three of the four holes from the 13th, and they closed out the match in style at the 16th when James, 23, sent a fabulous approach to five feet and Simon, a driver and part-time milkman who was 50 in July, delivered the birdie putt.

James described their triumph as “brilliant”, but for Simon the emotion was one of relief.

He said: ‘That is the least enjoyable round I have had this week. I did not want to let my partner down. He is a good golfer and has played to a good standard. He is used to the pressure.’

James and Simon had edged out Epping’s Steven Rowe and Luke Leggett
2&1 in the morning semi-finals.

Their final triumph stopped a second foursomes trophy going to the East Midlands after Loraine Howd and Wendy Kerry, of the Ruddington Grange club in Nottinghamshire, beat Debbie Deakin and Shelley Woodward, from Mickleover in Derbyshire, in the women’s final.

Men’s semi-finals: Cosby (Luke Burrows and Matt Peyton, 3) beat Broke Hill (Phillip Turnbull and Shaun Welch, combined handicap, 14) 3&1 ; Mendip (Simon Grant and James Popham, 7) bt Epping (Steve Rowe and Luke Leggett, 16) 2&1. Final: Mendip beat Cosby 3&2.
