Finals Preview and Last 16 draw

Daily Mail
13 Oct 2015

JUST 10 days after the British Masters returned to the golfing calendar, one of its spiritual homes will host the search to find the masters of the Daily Mail Foursomes for 2015.

The Marriott Forest of Arden hosted the British Masters five times between 1997 and 2005, numbering Colin Montgomerie and Thomas Bjorn among the champions at the venue.

Now 64 delighted club golfers have gathered at the West Midlands venue, ready to fight it out for the men’s and women’s trophies on offer in the Daily Mail Foursomes.

Jess Burrows, 26, of Ellesborough, and Kerri Harper, 30, of Inverness, may be the ones to beat in the women’s competition. Jess plays for Buckinghamshire and was county champion in 2011 while Kerri has represented Northern Counties for six years and is a past winner of the Scottish Universities title as well as being a former runner-up for the British Universities title.

However, they may have to contend with the experience of Chris Appleby, 50, of St Annes Old Links, who lifted the women’s trophy 12 years ago, while Marilyn Chapman and Jill Ware, of Low Laithes, are back at finals week just 12 months after reaching the last 16 showpiece.

Loudoun Gowf (correct) Club’s Elizabeth Keohone and Audrey Thompson also reached finals week at the Marriott Forest of Arden in 1999.

Strong contenders in the men’s draw include former Somerset county player James Popham, 23, of the Mendip club, former Sussex Colts players Roland Ainsworth, 37, of Lee-on-the-Solent, and Leicestershire second team players Luke Burrows,23, and Matt Peyton, of Cosby, who beat 2013 champions Chris Drabble and Dan Housley, of Horsley Lodge,
8&7 on their way to finals week.

Hornsea will be represented by Leigh Gawley, the East Riding matchplay champion, and Rees Brown, who has played for the East Riding of Yorkshire eight times in the last two years.

South Staffs’ Robert Barrett and Roger Humphreyson have made it all the way to finals week after 25 years of trying. But Robert was beaten to it by his sister, Helen Barrett, by 12 months. Helen and Penelope Toal represented the club at the showpiece last October.

Robert caddied for Helen on that occasion, so this week Helen is returning the favour.

Kevin Collins and Blair Moir, from Keith in the north of Scotland, pulled out all the stops to get to finals week. They drove to Aberdeen airport, flew to Manchester, took a train to Birmingham and a taxi from Birmingham.
