St Annes Appleby has close call to reach Finals 12 years on

CHRIS APPLEBY is back at finals week in the Daily Mail Foursomes - and she will be returning to the same venue where she lifted the women’s trophy 12 years ago.

Chris won the women’s title with fellow Preston golfer Iris Brattan at the Marriott Forest of Arden in 2003. Now representing St Annes Old Links, Chris and Sarah McNamara reached this year’s showpiece, to be played at the same West Midlands venue, with victory over Bolton Old Links’ Carol Helme and Karen Sawyer in the seventh round.

However, they had to go to the first extra hole to seal the win.
Incredibly, it was the third time in the last four rounds that Chris and her partner had been taken to extra holes, having also won at the 19th against Windermere’s Sue Dawes and Margaret Douglas in the fourth round and Warrington’s Fiona Goddard and Joanne Baldwin in round five.

And Chris is delighted to be back. “It seems like a long time ago,”
she said. “The whole experience - I had never experienced anything like it before. I was a relative newcomer then.”

Chris is now the experienced half of the partnership and turned 50 this year. That has opened up new opportunities for her, and she became the Lancashire senior ladies champion earlier this year.

Inverness’ Kerri Harper and Alison Daun became the first golfers to qualify for this year’s finals week when they beat Torphins’ Wilma Nichol and Marie Findlater 4&3 in the seventh round.
