AS the Daily Mail Foursomes enters its last round of matches before finals week at the Marriott Forest of Arden, two clubs are still in with the chance of sending both their men’s and women’s pairings to the showpiece.

Walmley’s Martin Harris and Alex McWhinnie took the scalp of Warwickshire’s Will Smith and Stoneleigh Deer Park colleague Johnny Reay with a two-hole victory in the sixth round.

They had already knocked out England international Oliver Farrell and his father, Les, from Evesham, in the fourth round.

And they were joined in round seven by clubmates Beverley Fiddes and Pauline Gibbon, who triumphed 5&4 over Hinckley’s Trudie Allen and Annette Cattermole in the sixth round.

In Scotland, Harburn’s Alan Groves and Richie Paul made the seventh round with a 2&1 win over Gleddoch’s Alistair Borthwick and James Sinclair, while Agnes Cosgrove and Dorothy Wilson also won through the sixth round when they beat Craigmillar Park’s Fiona Tyrrell and Mairi Pollock by two holes.

Epping’s Steve Rowe and Luke Leggett edged out East Herts’ Mark Lewis and Paul Vater by one hole in the sixth round, but Tracy Cawley and Kathy Simmons could not match their feats as they lost 4&2 to Wimbledon Park’s Elaine Halligan and Sally Aitken-Davies.

The Castle Royle club in Maidenhead and Porthmadog in Wales went into the sixth round with both of their men’s and women’s pairings still dreaming of lifting the trophies. But all four pairings had those aspirations dashed.

Castle Royle’s Stuart Aspinal and Jamie Edgar were beaten 4&2 by Oak Park’s Peter Rutland and Paul Stevens, while Sally Collier and Jules Tarr lost 2&1 to Ellesborough’s mother and daughter Karen and Jess Burrows.

The wheels came off in round for Porthmadog’s Peter Emmanuel and Bleddyn Williams, who were thrashed 6&5 by St Idloe’s Dave Williams and Andrew Evans, while clubmates Pip Settle and Debra Herbert lost
3&2 to Welshpool’s Margaret Bowen and Heather Lawton.
