Previous champions look to Finals return

Daily Mail

MARTYN WALKER and Paul Williams made an emphatic statement as they moved within one game of a return to the scene of their greatest triumph in the Daily Mail Foursomes.

The Forest Hills golfers lifted the foursomes trophy at the Marriott Forest of Arden in 2012 while representing the Forest of Dean club.

And as the finals prepare for a return to the West Midlands venue, Martyn and Paul stand on the brink of going back after a resounding
6&5 victory over Chippenham’s Stuart Ball and Martyn Garrett.

The margin of victory was all the more impressive considering how comfortably the Chippenham golfers progressed through their previous three rounds.

Their 3&2 success over Naunton Downs’ James Margetts and Stuart Goodall in round five was the least impressive of the three victories.

They had beaten Bath’s Kelvin Green and David Wonton 5&4 in the fourth round and Donnington Valley’s Dave Hardy and Mike Simmonds 4&2 in round three.

But Martyn has been the club champion at both Forest Hills and the Forest of Dean, a mile down the road in Gloucestershire, and he and Paul have yet to be taken to the 18th hole during their six matches in the foursomes this year.
