A handful of aces

ACES keep flying in during this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes tournament.

Hexham’s Kim Steward, Bury St Edmunds’ Fiona Glasswell and Dolgellau’s Sheila Jones all recorded hole in ones during this year’s second round.

Now Matt Horton, of Brookfield (pictured), has completed the full set of four aces with a hole in one of his own during his club’s fifth-round match against Birchwood’s Mike Benson and Frank Bird.

Matt, 22, used a six-iron to hole his tee shot at the downwind 196-yard ninth hole on his home course, where he works as a greenkeeper as well as captaining the club’s top-of-the-table first team in the North Staffs League.

He said: ‘It was absolutely chucking it down when I stood on the tee.
I was going to hit one more club but my playing partner, Craig Mayman, told me not to.

‘There is a big pond in front of the green and only about three yards to the flag. It pitched a metre short of the green but I didn’t see it go into the hole because I was jumping under my brolly.

‘I got down to the green and was saying “where’s my ball?” and the guys we were playing against said it was in the hole. I couldn’t believe it.’

It was Matt’s second hole in one, having achieved his first three-and-a-half years ago at the now closed Gorsty Hill club, and it proved pivotal to the fifth-round victory.

‘We were only one-up at the time,’ said Matt. But his ace put Craig and him two-up, and they reeled off the next four holes to complete a stunning 6&5 victory.

They were about to celebrate in style when they returned to the clubhouse. Matt said: ‘The club put £100 behind the bar as they have insurance for a hole in one in a competition. There was a club medal on the same day so everyone was able to have a drink with us.’

Members will be looking to raise another glass to Matt and Craig should they win through two more rounds and reach finals week at the Marriott Forest of Arden in October.
