Two former champion pairs hope for Finals return

FORMER champions Martyn Walker and Paul Williams are over halfway to a return to the scene of their triumph in this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes.
And the golfers who succeeded them as foursomes champions are matching them stride for stride on the long road to the Marriott Forest of Arden.
Martyn and Paul put the name of the Forest of Dean on the foursomes trophy at the West Midlands venue in 2012. Now playing for the Forest Hills club, a mile up the road in Gloucestershire, they have won through four of the seven rounds that players must negotiate to reach finals week.
Their latest triumph came at Stinchcombe Hill, where they beat the home club’s Nigel Clarke and Lee Wilson 3&2 in the fourth round.
It is a much better effort than they managed in the defence of the title, when they were beaten by two holes by Paul Gibson and Gavin Butcher, now clubmates at Forest Hills, in the first round in 2013.
Martyn and Paul were succeeded as champions by Chris Drabble and Dan Housley, of Horsley Lodge, who lifted the trophy at Marriott St Pierre in October 2013.
Now the pair of Derbyshire county golfers are back in the hunt for the big prize, although they were made to work for their fourth-round victory as they beat Trent Lodge’s Steve Cooper and Rob Bacon at the first extra hole.
It was the second successive round the 2013 champions had been taken beyond the 18th hole, having beaten Marriott Breadsall Priory’s Rob Caple and Steve Cousins at the 19th in the third round.
