Canmore leave it to the last

Daily Mail
01 Jul 2015

SUMMER days are getting shorter again following the solstice, but Stephen and Ryan Smith could be forgiven for thinking theirs are getting longer, especially when they are playing in the Daily Mail Foursomes.
The father and son from the Canmore club in Fife had to go all the way to beat another father and son, Aberdour’s Eddie and Andrew Travers, by one hole in the second round.
But their journey got even tougher from there. They had to go to the first extra hole to beat Dunfermline’s Don Deveney and Bernie Harrower in the third round, then to the second extra hole before finally toppling Burntisland’s Brian Hunter and Gordon Scott in the fourth round.
It was a similar story for Sene Valley’s Irene Ahern and Alison Kelly in the women’s tournament.
They were taken to the 18th hole before sealing a one-up victory over Canterbury’s Lyn Lee and Nicki Hart in the second round, then went to the first extra hole to beat Walmer and Kingsdown’s Linda McCloughlin and Wendy Stone and also to the 19th hole when triumphing over Tenterden’s Val Chandler and Claire Canter in the fourth round.
They will be hoping for an easier ride in the three further rounds before finals week at the Marriott Forest of Arden in October.
