2013 Champions hope to repeat success

Daily Mail

DAN Housley and Chris Drabble are back in the hunt for the Daily Mail Foursomes title, 18 months after lifting the trophy.
The Horsley Lodge golfers, who both play for Derbyshire, lifted the trophy at Marriott St Pierre in 2013 when they triumphed over Moss Valley’s Leslie Waddell and Craig Goodwin in a tense final.
Their defence of the trophy progressed only one round last year before they were beaten 5&3 by Chevin’s Paul Akers and fellow Derbyshire player Paul Tatlow in the second round.
But they have already bettered that this year, having beaten Erewash Valley’s Gary Wheatley and Ryan Broad 4&3 in the second round.
Meanwhile, the Moss Valley pairing they beat to lift the crown are also through to this year’s third round following a 3&2 victory for Les and Craig over Clay’s Mike Eaton and Richard Evans in round two.
However, while two of the tournament’s modern success stories continue to progress in the men’s draw, two of its stalwarts on the women’s side have bowed out.
Moira Wilson, 66, lifted the trophy as long ago as 1989 and reached the quarter-finals in 2012 and the last 16 in 2005.
But her run came to an end this year when North Shore’s Ruth Robertson and Katherine Hughes beat Moira and her Seacroft playing partner, Lindsey Bee, 5&3 in the second round.
Trish Wilson put the name of Chelmsford on the women’s trophy in 1997. But her challenge alongside Brenda Skudder this year was snuffed out in the first round as Kim Sparks and Pat Martin, of Warley Park, triumphed by two holes.
The finals this year will be played at the Marriott Forest of Arden in October. For more news, results and information about the tournament, go to www.mailgolf.co.uk.
