Experience wins through for South Staffs men

Daily Mail

ROBERT BARRETT and Roger Humpreyson showed there is no substitute for experience as they won through the second round of the Daily Mail Foursomes.
The South Staffs golfers conceded 84 years to Liam Butler and Chad Mills, of the Mark Butler Golf Academy.
That meant they were often 60 yards short of their opponents’ drives off the tee.
But a slow start by the teenage visitors to South Staff gave Robert, 63, and Roger, 59, an early advantage, and the home pairing went on to win 4&3.
Roger said: ‘It was local knowledge that got us through.’
Robert and Roger have been playing in the Daily Mail Foursomes for well over 20 years, qualifying to represent their club in the main draw on four occasions. Their best effort took them to the sixth round, but they have yet to reach finals week, for the last 16 pairings in the men’s and women’s draw.
They will be hoping to use that experience to go all the way to finals week at the Marriott Forest of Arden in October. However, although this year’s finals venue is only 30 miles from the South Staffs club, they know there is a long and arduous road ahead to get there, with all last 16 clubs having to negotiate their way through seven rounds.
Roger, who still plays county seniors golf for Staffordshire, also has experience of the Wishaw course, having played there in the Midlands Champion of Champions for the area’s club champions, and he said: ‘It’s a beautiful course.’
