Lancaster lift 2014 Trophy

Daily Mail
15 Oct 2014

MICHAEL SLATER wondered whether he would play golf again when he lost his right thumb in an accident with a circular saw.
But, 12 years on, Michael and Lancaster clubmate Martyn Kippax lifted the Daily Mail Foursomes trophy yesterday after a thrilling final against Shirehampton Park brothers Paul and James Burt that finished at the first extra hole.
Michael, 51, lost his thumb in an accident while chopping logs. He said: ‘I was flown from Lancaster to hospital in Manchester. The pain was terrific but I looked down at Lancaster Golf Club and all I can remember thinking was, “I’m going to join there one day”.
‘It was a nightmare to start with. I obviously had to change my grip on the club.
‘But at the end of the day it’s nothing. People lose limbs.
‘I’m quite stubborn and quite determined so I thought “never give up”.’
That never-say-day attitude came in handy again yesterday as he and Martyn, 60, trailed the brothers from Bristol by three holes with six to play in the final.
Birdies at the seventh and ninth had seemed to put the Shirehampton Park pair in command, and a par at the 10th was good enough to stretch their lead to three holes.
But the Lancaster boys won the 13th with a shot before Michael produced a pin-high 226-yard five wood to win the 14th and when their opponents conceded the 16th it was all square.
It was left to Martyn to sank the winning putt and seal the trophy after the boys from Bristol found a fairway bunker at the 19th.
Two father-and-son combinations were beaten in the semi-finals. Cave Castle’s Steven and Ethan Gott lost 3&2 to Shirehampton Park while Strathaven’s David and Will Davison also lost 3&2 to Lancaster.
SEMI-FINALS: Cave Castle (Steven and Ethan Gott, combined handicap 10) lost to Shirehampton Park (Paul and James Burt, 12) 3&2; Strathaven (David and Will Davison, 15) lost to Lancaster (Martyn Kippax and Michael Slater, 25) 3&2.
FINAL: Shirehampton Park lost to Lancaster at 19th.
