Northants County hope to make history

Daily Mail

OVER 3,000 pairings who started out in the Daily Mail Foursomes at the start of the year have at last been whittled down to just 32, with the line-up of finalists now complete.
The last 16 men’s pairings and the last 16 women’s pairings will gather at Marriott Dalmahoy, outside Edinburgh, for three days next month, when the winners of the two trophies will be decided over four rounds.
Only six clubs - Dirleton Castle, Dundalk, Piltdown, Preston, Tracy Park and Woodhall Spa - have put their names more than once on any of the trophies.
Now Northamptonshire County have the chance of becoming the magnificent seventh after Sue Barrick and Stephanie Goodings beat Porters Park’s Anita Healy and Anita (correct) Prosser by just one hole in the seventh round.
Sue and Stephanie will no doubt take inspiration from fellow Northamptonshire County members Kelly Hanwell and Kirstie Jennings, who won the women’s trophy at the same Scottish venue just six years ago.
Three other clubs with their names on one of the two trophies missed out on the chance to become multiple winners when they fell at the final hurdle before the showpiece.
Sandiway’s Carol Dodd and Julie Dunn lost 4&3 to Stonyhurst Park’s Joyce Kenyon and Ann Hudson, while Sherborne’s Julia Norman and Beryl Watts were beaten 3&2 by Bigbury’s Amanda Burchell and Jane Rickman.
In the men’s competition, Queens Park’s Tim Harty and Justin Morris also went down 3&2 to Shirehampton Park brothers Jamie and Paul Burt.
