Rhyl men play extra holes three rounds in a row

NOBODY can expect an easy ride in the Daily Mail Foursomes, but Trefor Prytherch (correct) and Cliff Howes are finding out just how difficult it can be.
The Rhyl pairing have been taken to extra holes in each of their last three matches, and their fourth-round encounter proved to be their longest match to date.
Trefor and Cliff needed three extra holes to beat Penmaenmawr’s David Hughes and Darren Williams. This followed nail-biting clashes against Conwy’s Gareth Williams in the second round and Flint’s Brian Bagshaw and Steve Edwards in the third, matches that both finished at the 19th hole.
They have three more rounds to negotiate if they are to reach finals week at Marriott Dalhamoy, and they will no doubt be hoping they are easier than the last three.
Sutton Bridge’s Jon Poole and Shaun Watts have had it almost at tough, beating Gedney Hill’s Rob Newns and David Lord at the 19th hole in the second round and Middleton Hall’s Mark Butt and Iain Yule at the second extra hole in the fourth. But those triumphs sandwiched a distinctly more comfortable triumph in the third round over Geoff Chant and Roly Fincham, who failed to live up to their club’s Eagles name as they went down 8&7.
In the women’s tournament, Royal North Devon’s Anna Wright and Sarah Butterfield have won at the first extra hole in each of their last two matches, against Portmore’s Joanne Lethaby and Dawn Blackmore in the third round and Enmore Park’s Debbie Dingle and Janet Waplington in the fourth.
