Heyrose and Horsley dash St Thomas's dream of double glory

ST THOMAS’S PRIORY stood on the verge of sending both their pairings to finals week when the seventh round of the Daily Mail Foursomes teed off.
But their men and women suffered the same disappointing fate as both fell at the final hurdle.
Michelle McHale and Val Rooney were good enough to topple former professional and England international Julia Gaunt and Lynn Gray, from Drayton Park in Staffordshire, in the fourth round.
But they went down 2&1 to Heyrose’s Sandra Richardson and Sabrina Duncan in the seventh round with finals week almost within touching distance.
Fellow St Thomas’s Priory members John and Craig Jennings also made it through six rounds of the annual marathon and went even closer to making the showpiece. But the Jennings brothers went out at the same seventh-round stage after going as far as the first extra hole before secumbing to Horsley Lodge’s Chris Drabble and Dan Housley.
Royal Tarlair’s Rae Topping and Priscilla Smart came within one match of an immediate return to finals week after reaching the quarter-finals last October.
But their hopes were ended in emphatic style by Murcar’s Susan Murray and Pat Wilson, who won their seventh-round clash 7&6.
However, their conquerors will join the rest of the seventh-round winners at the showpiece for the last 16 men’s and women’s pairings, which this year will be played at Marriott St Pierre at Chepstow in October.
