Ely City ladies stride on emphatically

Daily Mail

JUST who is going to stop the ladies from Ely City in this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes. That is the question their vanquished opponents will be asking after their all-conquering run of form.
Patricia Nixon and Elaine Bertram moved to within one match of finals week with the most emphatic of a series of thumping victories, beating Flempton’s Sarah Brownie and Rachel Mason 8&6 in the sixth round.
No fewer than three of their previous five wins have taken just 13 holes, with 6&5 victories coming against Ryston Park’s Greta Good and Gill Savage in the first round, Lesley Duncan and Marion Earle from the Links club at Newmarket in round three and St Ives’ Trish Whittamore and Kathy Cooper in the fifth round.
Four of their six victories have been achieved on their home course, which is always an advantage, but their wins at Ryston Park and Swaffham, where they beat Ann Ewer and Jan Trollope 5&3 in the fourth round, have been equally emphatic.
Their closest match was provided by Lakeside Lodge’s Wendy Cox and Joanne Jones in round two, but even then Patricia and Elaine shook hands on a convincing 4&2 victory.
One thing is for sure. With a place at Marriott St Pierre on offer to all seventh-round winners, those still standing after round six will be looking to avoid the ladies from the Cambridgeshire cathedral city when the draw is made in a couple of weeks’ time.
