Moss Valley pair stage comeback to get one step closer to Finals

CRAIG GOODWIN and Les Waddell produced perhaps the comeback of the sixth round to move within one more victory of the Daily Mail Foursomes’ finals week.
And that has left Les’ wife, Alison, fretting over a potential clash of dates.
The golfers from Moss Valley were four down to Old Colwyn’s Marc and James Brute after 11 holes. But a couple of birdies in the next six holes helped them roar back to stand all square on the 18th tee.
They even survived going out of bounds at the 18th as their opponents did likewise, and they managed to close out an unlikely if high-class victory with another birdie at the second extra hole.
Les said: ‘We were down all the way through the match and we didn’t get in front until the 20th hole. But it was a really good game. I think we were both one over par gross for 18 holes.’
Now the Moss Valley pairing need just to win their seventh-round match to reach finals week at Marriott St Pierre.
Craig and Les are both 39 and have been friends since the age of six, playing football together for Wales at Under 15 level.
Les will celebrate his 40th birthday on October 13, which is the day the finalists gather at the luxury Chepstow venue for the practice round and gala dinner prior to the start of the serious business.
Les said: ‘My wife is hoping we lose in the seventh round because I think she has planned something for my birthday. I don’t mind. I would rather be at the finals.’
The boys of Mile End may have something to say about that. Darren Roberts and David Thomas set up a seventh-round clash against Craig and Les with a two-hole victory over Grange Park’s Neil Barlow and Anthony Turner in round six.
