Coxmoor's Scothern hopes for Finals after 15 year gap

MARTIN SCOTHERN reached the Daily Mail Foursomes finals week almost 15 years ago, and the Coxmoor golfer is closing on another appearance at the showpiece after coming through a titantic struggle in this year’s fifth round.
The two-time Nottinghamshire Amateur Champion and former Great Britain Club Champion of Champions and fellow Coxmoor golfer Fraser Darrington moved to within two matches of finals week as they triumphed over Birstall’s Leicestershire county pairing of Scott Wormleighton and Stuart Marriott in round five.
Scott and Leicestershire captain Stuart were fresh off their county’s triumph at the Midlands Team Championship. But, despite winning their match against Whetstone’s Andy Lee and Karl Garner at the first extra hole in the previous round, they couldn’t quite complete an extra-time double as they were beaten at the 19th hole this time around.
Having trailed by two holes at the turn, the Coxmoor golfers were two under par for the last five holes to take the match into extra time, and they produced a miraculous four from a fairway bunker to close out victory at the 19th.
Coxmoor’s victory over Birstall was the second time this year that both clubs had been forced to go to extra holes, the Nottinghamshire pairing having beaten Marriott Breadsall Priory’s Ken Sherlock and Dave Small in the opening round.
Martin, who still plays off scratch, lifted his club champions of champions trophy at the Marriott Forest of Arden.
He will now be hoping to play at the Forest of Arden’s sister course, Marriott St Pierre, when the last 16 men’s pairings and last 16 women’s pairings contest finals week at the Chepstow venue in October.
