Seacroft player sees handicap drop by 5 shots

MOIRA WILSON and Tara Massey moved to within two games of an immediate return to the Daily Mail Foursomes’ finals week, despite a sizeable cut to their handicap.
An outstanding performance in her Seacroft club championship meant Tara went into her fifth-round foursomes match with a five-shot reduction in her handicap. It meant her handicap has gone down seven shots this year alone.
However, the Seacroft golfers still had too much for Mandy Lees and Lorraine Robinson, from the Toft Hotel club, in round five, although it proved a nailbiting affair as Moira and Tara needed to par the first extra hole to inch past their opponents.
The Skegness golfers reached the quarter-finals last October, while Moira, 64, lifted the trophy with Helen Dobson in 1989 and also reached finals week with Hannah Seymour in 2005, when the finals were held at this year’s venue, Marriott St Pierre at Chepstow.
Seacroft could yet have two pairings at this year’s finals week after Russell Toombes and A Ryland moved into the sixth round of the men’s tournament with a 6&5 victory over Belton Woods’ Brian Robinson and Sam Pigott.
Royal Tarlair’s Rae Topping and Priscilla Smart could also still enjoy an immediate return to finals week after another of last year’s quarter-finalists in the women’s tournament beat Deesside’s Carol McGregor and Jacqui Henderson 2&1 in the fifth round this year.
