Worksop and Woburn amateurs out perform professionals

Daily Mail

MEMBERS of Worksop and Woburn golf clubs may have felt disappointed as their men came up just short in The Open Championship on Sunday.
But, despite the near misses for Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter, both clubs could be celebrating picking up a prestigious piece of silverware when the Daily Mail Foursomes trophies are handed out in October.
Worksop’s Martyn Coss and David Coates had to go to the first extra hole to see off Phoenix’s Richard Bee and Carl McGuiness in the fifth round of the men’s draw, but Woburn’s Sheila Harrison and Jane Wetherall raced to an 8&6 victory over Silverstone’s Julie Edwards and Tracy Bishop in the women’s fifth round.
That followed a 6&5 victory over South Beds’ Christine McDermott and Pauline Thomas in round three and a 5&4 triumph over Aylesbury Vale’s Julie Hoar and Gail Wickersham in the fourth round.
Now the women of Woburn will be looking to match or even better the achievement of clubmates Jeremy Smith and Nick Wilson, who made it all the way to finals week three years ago before being beaten in the last 16 by Lincoln’s Eddie Smith and Keith Taylor.
If they are looking for omens, the finals that year were held at Marriott St Pierre and this October they will return to the Chepstow venue, which has hosted top tournaments such as the Solheim Cup and British Masters, for the first time since then.
All fifth-round winners need to win two more matches to reach finals week.
