Three clubs vying to win Foursomes trophy a second time

THREE clubs are still vying to win the Daily Mail Foursomes’ women’s final for the second time in the last five years.
When the finals were last held at Marriott St Pierre three years ago, the name of Sandiways went on the women’s trophy as Isabelle Slater and Dorothy Larmour beat Raglan Parc’s Denise Hill and Nic Matthews.
Now, as the finals prepare to return to the Chepstow venue, Janet Carter and Alison Green are mounting another tilt at the title for the Cheshire club after a 3&2 fourth-round victory over Malkins Bank’s Cath Malpass and Helen Carter in this year's fourth round.
The name of Walton Heath went on the women’s trophy as recently as 2009, when Nicola Smith and Jane Burrage were victorious at the Marriott Forest of Arden.
Now Julia Brook and Gill Blok are looking to do the same for the former Ryder Cup venue after reaching this year’s fifth round.
However, they have found the going pretty tough so far. Their one-hole victory over Reigate Heath’s Rosie Kiek and Susanne Glass in the fourth round followed two other close struggles.
They had to go to the first extra hole to beat Chipstead’s Emma Andersen and Sue Jarman in the second round before following that up with a slightly more comfortable 2&1 success over Cuddington’s Elizabeth Young and Andrea Shires in round three.
Walton Heath succeeded Northamptonshire County as women’s champions after Kirstie Jennings and Kelly Hanwell had triumphed in 2008 at Marriott Dalmahoy.
Now Gillian Curley and Annie Haig are looking to repeat the feat for the East Midlands club after they also won by one hole over Debbie Harrad and Claire Scott away at Rugby in the fourth round.
Marriott St Pierre has hosted tournaments like the British Masters and the Solheim Cup in the past and will again provide a stern challenge for the Daily Mail Foursomes finalists.
