Back to back birdies see Birstall through

Daily Mail

STUART MARRIOTT and Scott Wormleighton sank back-to-back birdies to complete an unlikely come-from-behind victory in the Daily Mail Foursomes’ fourth round.
The Birstall golfers were two holes down with just three to play against Whetstone’s Andy Lee and Karl Garner. But, after winning the 16th hole, they took the match into extra time by birdieing the 18th.
And a birdie three at the 19th hole sent Scott and Stuart, who play off one and two, into the fifth round.
Ipswich’s Graham Wardley and Mark Thomas also won the 18th and birdied the first extra hole to triumph in their fourth-round match.
They trailed Woodbridge’s Alan Scovell and Gary Seaman by one hole as they stood on the 18th tee. But a par was good enough to take the hole and Graham, who also plays off one, holed a 15-foot birdie putt at the first extra hole to put the Ipswich golfers into round five.
It was the third time in four rounds that Graham and Mark had been forced to go all the way to the 18th hole, having beaten Ufford Park’s Terry Noble and Alan McMillan by one hole in the first round and Fynn Valley’s Greg Byford and Andy Miller by two holes in round three, but it was the first time they had gone beyond that.
They will have to negotiate three more rounds to make it to finals week, for the last 16 pairings, which this year takes places at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow.
