Second round sees extra holes abound

Daily Mail

CHRIS VOWLES and David Crewe survived a remarkable collapse before squeezing through their second-round match in the Daily Mail Foursomes.
The pairing from Long Sutton in Somerset looked to be on their way to an emphatic victory when they stood five up with only seven holes to play against Rushmore’s Robin Doble and Mark Stranger.
But such was the reversal of fortunes that the four men walked off the 18th green all square.
However, Chris and David rediscovered their form in the nick of time to close out the victory at the first extra hole.
That, though, was by no means the most tense finish to a match as two second-round clashes were decided at the fourth extra hole.
In Lancashire, Houghwood’s Steven Walker and Darren Weston edged out Tunshill’s Steven Leonard and Barry Diamond at the 22nd hole while in Surrey Tony Botterill and Terry Raines, from Puttenham, triumphed at the same stage of their match against Pyrford’s John Evans and James Harrison.
All clubs must negotiate seven rounds before the last 16 pairings in both the men’s and women’s tournaments contest finals week.
This year, finals week will be played at Marriott St Pierre, the former home of the Solheim Cup and British Masters, at Chepstow.
