NOT one of last year’s finalists has made it through the third round in the Daily Mail Foursomes men’s event this time around.
Richard Hamilton, from the Treloy club in Cornwall, was the last man standing, having reached the last 16 at finals week in October with Neil Childs. But Richard and Matthew Milburn were beaten 3&1 by Holsworthy’s Colin Davies and Les Ellender in this year’s third round.
At least Richard had the consolation of knowing he had performed better this time around than last year’s final two.
Andy Hills and Peter Smith, runners-up in October who play for Harefield Place, went out in the second round this year, beaten by one hole by Sudbury’s Matt Pegg and Daniel Jeffries.
But that was better than last year’s winners, Martyn Walker and Paul Williams, from the Forest of Dean. They were beaten by two holes by Paul Gibson and Gavin Butcher, from the Forest Hills club in Gloucestershire, in the first round - the very first match in defence of their title.
Richard and Neil went out in last 16 in October, beaten by Goodwood’s Chris Dyson and Robin Smith, eventual losing quarter-finalists, by one hole.
Clubs must fight through seven rounds to reach finals week, when the last 16 men’s pairs and the last 16 women’s pairs play for the two trophies at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow.
