Kings of the grandstand finish

Daily Mail
17 May 2013

MARTIN BARNES and Mark Barrett are fast building a reputation as the kings of the grandstand finish in this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes.
The men from the Crompton & Royton club in Lancashire won the 16th and 17th holes to seal a 2&1 win over Skipton’s Ian Dean and Dean Holmes in round three.
But that performance was eclipsed by their dramatic second-round comeback against Dunkinfield’s Grahame Barrett and Martyn Schofield, when they won each of the last three holes to come from two holes down to win one up.
Martin, who plays off scratch, and Mark also pulled off a last-hole victory in the first round, beating Walmersley’s Clive and Ben Varley by one hole.
Thomas Macuire and William Gordon, meanwhile, are fast becoming the kings of the late finish, having gone to extra holes in each of the last two rounds.
The men from Hilton Park in Strathclyde, Scotland beat Bearsden’s Chris Prior and Craig Littlejohn at the 19th hole in round three, having also gone to the first extra hole to defeat Douglas Park’s Gavin Durmin and Andy Haughey in the second round.
It’s a long road from Scotland to Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow, Wales if you carry on like that as each club have to negotiate seven rounds to make it into finals week.
