Nevill launch campaign with new team

WHEN Todd Adcock represented Nevill as English Amateur Champion, he still came up short in the Daily Mail Foursomes.
His fourth-round defeat, not for the first time, highlighted one of the strengths of the competition, that the 18-handicapper has as much chance of lifting the foursomes trophy as the most decorated champion.
Todd is now plying his trade on the EuroPro Tour and the Nevill mantle has been taken up by his former Sussex team-mate Richard Fung-On.
Todd and Richard were team-mates when Nevill finished runners-up in the Mail on Sunday Classic in 2008, and Richard set out on this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes marathon in good style, partnering David Blundell to a 4&3 victory over Hever Castle’s Mark Turner and Alan Hilton in the first round.
Todd, meanwhile, has made it through qualifying school to play another season on the EuroPro Tour, qualifying alongside Ashley Smith, from the Garforth club in West Yorkshire.
But Ashley’s big break is bad news for Garforth’s hopes of lifting the foursomes trophy in their centenary year.
Ashley and fellow Garforth member Mark Lawson pulled off a one-hole victory over Normanton’s Mark Griffiths and Des Lawson in the foursomes first round, but Ashley’s venture into the professional ranks means he and Mark cannot be around when the finals are played at Marriott St Pierre in October.
Each club must make it through seven rounds before the last 16 pairings in both the men’s and women’s competition compete for the two trophies at the Chepstow course.
