Forest of Dean are men's champions

Daily Mail
17 Oct 2012

Paul Williams was not even sure he would be able to stick around long enough to play if he made the final of the Daily Mail Foursomes at the Marriott Forest of Arden.
His wife, Marie, is expecting their second child in three weeks and 35-year-old Paul had been waiting for the phone call which would have sent him rushing back to his Gloucestershire home.
But the phone didn’t ring and Paul has something special to tell his new offspring about after he and Martyn Walker, 38, a scratch golfer, from the Forest of Dean, won the men’s final 2&1 against Andy Hills and Peter Smith, from Harefield Place in Middlesex.
Paul must be one of the more unorthodox golfers to lift the trophy, playing with his left hand below his right in a right-handed stance and putting left-handed.
‘I am naturally left-handed but my dad bought me some right-handed clubs when I started and I didn’t have the heart to change,’ he said.
But it has allowed him to achieve a five handicap and he mastered the challenge of the Marriott Forest of Arden, a course that has hosted European Tour events such as the British Masters and English Open, on his way to the title.
It was Paul’s fine approach play and Martyn’s solid putting which turned a two-hole deficit for the Forest of Dean pairing after five holes of the final into a two-hole advantage by the 10th.
They extended that lead to three at the 14th but a touch of the jitters allowed their opponents to win the next two holes before Paul and Martyn closed out victory on the 17th green.
It was the second time Andy had been disappointed in finals week, having lost in the quarter-finals in 2007.
Andy and Peter had triumphed 4&3 in their morning semi-final against Christchurch’s Christian Williams and Martyn Jones, who could not lift themselves again after two gruelling matches the day before. The pairing from the south coast had to go to the second extra hole to beat Roger Greenwood and John Healey, from Halifax West End, in the previous morning’s last 16 before going straight into a quarter-final against Downfield’s Graham Bell and Richard Scott,, the reigning Scottish Doubles champions.
The Christchurch pairing won that on the 18th green by two holes.
Paul and Martyn had won their semi-final on the 18th hole, beating two-time Flintshire county champion and Welsh Victory Foursomes champion Tim Roberts and Mike Pickford, from the Padeswood & Buckley club, by one hole.
