O'Sullivans finally have their day

Daily Mail
04 Sep 2012

HILJA and Liana O’Sullivan became the first pairing to qualify for finals week at this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes - four years after their bid ended in crushing disappointment.
The mother and daughter from Stocksbridge & District sealed their place at the Marriott Forest of Arden showpiece with a 3&2 victory in the seventh round over Woodsome Hall’s Brenda Heaton and Celia Mansfield.
And that helped ease the memory of their 2008 bid, when they were denied a place at finals week as they lost to former champion Elaine Clark and Karen Clayton, from Manchester, at the third extra hole in the seventh and final round before the showpiece.
Their passage this year has been much smoother, having beaten all their opponents without having to go as far as the 18th hole. Hanging Heaton’s Anne Jennings and Madelaine Armitage were dispatched 8&7 in the third round while Wakefield’s Tracey Waterhouse and Ruby Wilson were beaten 7&6 in round four.
Liana, 23, represented Yorkshire Schools in the Northern Championship and was the Sheffield Ladies Matchplay Champion in 2007, 2008 and 2010. Liana holds the women’s course record of 68 at Stocksbridge and District while her brother, Liam, 26, holds the men’s record of 62.
Andy Hills and Peter Smith, from Harefield Place in Middlesex, became the first men’s pairing to qualify for finals week when they beat Braintree’s Robert Barrell and David Minton 3&1 in the seventh round.
