Sixth round victories and losses for county players

NORFOLK county captain Alex Cowie and England senior international Jo Ashmore saw their hopes in the Daily Mail Foursomes squashed, so to speak, for another year as they went out in the sixth round.
Cowie, who in her other guise steered England squash teams to seven world titles, and Ashmore, from the Barnham Broom club near Norwich, were soundly beaten 8&6 by Angie Lewis and Karoline Chan, from the Suffolk Golf and Country Club.
Cheshire County Senior Ladies Champion Caroline Berry also went out in the sixth round and she and Margaret Nelson, from the Bromborough club, were beaten by one hole by Caernarfon's Luned Jones and Sandra Garnett.
Another pair of high-profile casualties in round six were Durham county champion Pauline Dobson and Durham county player Leslie Jennings. The South Moor pairing lost by one hole to Woodsome Hall’s Brenda Heaton and Celia Mansfield.
However, Hampshire county player Elly Gardner and her Botley Park partner, Sarah Mulhall, made it through the sixth round with a 2&1 victory over Jackie Urry and Caroline Pinter, from Gosport and Stokes.
And they were joined in the next round by Lancashire county player Sarah Cousins, who teamed up with Margot Hunter in the Silverdale pairing that beat June Crossley and Mandy Oldham, from Accrington & District, 4&3.
All six-round winners will have to win just one more match to reach finals week at the Marriott Forest of Arden in October.
