Great and the good go through to the sixth round

THE great and the good are coming to the fore in the women’s section of the Daily Mail Foursomes as finals week moves ever closer.
Pauline Dobson, the Durham county champion, and Lesley Jennings, who also represents Durham and reached the semi-finals in the county championships, moved to within two games of the showpiece occasion after a 3&1 fifth-round victory for South Moor over Moor Allerton’s Julia Samways and Jan Mackie.
They were joined by Elly Gardner, a Hampshire county player, and Sarah Cousins, a Lancashire county player. Elly and Sarah Mulhall, of Botley Park, beat Stoneham’s Kim Holmes and Bridget Stow 3&1 while Sarah partnered her mother-in-law, Margot Hunter, of Silverdale, to a 2&1 fifth-round triumph over Heysham’s Susan Jones and Jackie Gow.
Margot and Sarah are looking to make finals week for the second time in three years, having reached the last 16 at Marriott St Pierre in 2010.
Cornwall county champion Sarah-Jane Boyd is due to play in the fifth round this week. Sarah-Jane and Nathalie John, of Truro, take on West Cornwall’s Anne Uren and Julia Waters.
However, Susan Wood, a Lanarkshire player and former county champion who reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish women’s amateur championship this year, went out in the fifth round when she and Hazel Patterson, from Drumpellier, lost by two holes to Dumfermline’s Sam Burton and Sarah Govan.
