Slinfold ladies set out to go one better

KAREN ASHCROFT and Cathy Downey may have missed out on a place in the final of the Daily Mail Foursomes by a single shot last year.
But, while both of last year’s finalists went out in the early stages of this year’s tournament, the ladies from Slinfold in West Sussex are making a concerted effort to reach the latter stages again.
Karen and Cathy finished a single shot behind Drayton Park’s Lynn Gray and Julia Gaunt, a former England international and ladies professional player, at Marriott Dalmahoy last October. The Staffordshire pairing went on to lose 2&1 in the final as Angela Paton and Kay Dalton, from the Three Rivers club in Essex, lifted the trophy.
But last year’s champions went out in only the second round this time around, beaten at the first extra hole by Rochford Hundred’s Jo Rumsey and Jennie Roberts.
And Lynn and Julia joined them in a second-round exit when they went out to North Warwickshire’s Samantha Stanley and Christine Copper, edged out by one hole.
Karen and Cathy, however, are still in with a chance of being in this year’s final after winning their fourth-round match against Gatton Manor’s Rita Rice, a quarter-finalist herself in 2010, and Ruth O’Mahoney 3&1.
Samantha and Christine are still going strong after the North Warwickshire pairing beat the Marriott Forest of Arden’s Irene Langley and Lynda Ward 6&4.
However, Jo and Jennie went out in the fourth round, when the Rochford Hundred pairing lost 4&2 to Warley Park’s Sue Warden and Sonia Blyth.
Finals week this year will be at the Marriott Forest of Arden in October.
