Last past champion standing

Daily Mail
29 May 2012

MOIRA WILSON came out on top in a second-round battle of the former finalists to become the last woman champion standing in this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes.
Moira, a winner in 1989 and finalist in 2005, and Tara Massey, from the Seacroft club near Skegness, pulled off a 5&4 victory against Kenwick Park’s Helen Dawson and Sue Fisher.
Helen and Sue reached finals week at Royal Porthcawl in 1997 and Marriott Meon Valley in 1998, when they went out in the quarter-finals both times. Helen was also part of the Kenwick Park team who won the Mail on Sunday Classic in 1995.
With reigning champions Kay Dalton and Angela Paton, from the Three Rivers club in Essex, going out at the first extra hole to Jo Rumsey and Jennie Roberts, from the Rochford Hundred club, in the second round, Moira is the only former women’s champion remaining in this year’s competition.
Moira lifted the trophy at Royal Porthcawl a year after her opponents’ last finals week appearance in 1989 when partnered by Helen Dobson, who went on to play in the 1990 Curtis Cup before turning professional three years later.
Moira also reached finals week in 2005 when partnered by Hannah Seymour, and now she is striving for a third appearance at the showpiece.
The finals this year will be played at the Marriott Forest of Arden in the West Midlands.
