Downfield hoping for a shot at the trophy

GRAHAM BELL is looking to follow up a trophy-laden 2011 by landing the Daily Mail Foursomes title this year.
The Downfield golfer, from the Tayside area of Scotland, won the Angus county strokeplay championship, the county matchplay title and was part of the six-man Downfield team that won the county inter-club championship.
He has also won a number of Scottish seniors titles, teaming up with Richard Scott in the pairs events.
Graham and Richard reached the Daily Mail Foursomes’ finals week at Marriott St Pierre in 2005 - losing to the eventual champions Mark Wootten and Anthony Killick in the last 16 - and now they have made it to the fourth round this year after a 2&1 victory over St Michaels’ Fraz Cunningham and Martin Cull.
Graham, 53, still plays off a plus two handicap, and two more players with handicaps better than scratch, Harry Chapple and Matthew Wright, have also reached the fourth round.
Harry and Richard Chapple, from the Calcot Park club at Reading, beat Tylney Park’s John Rawlings and James Fox 4&3 in the third round.
Matthew, who featured in the Faldo Junior Series last year, has teamed up with Terry Field to represent the Silkstone club in South Yorkshire this year, and they reached round four with a 4&3 victory over Hickleton’s Steve Bridges and Lewis Foster.
Finals week this year will be at the Marriott Forest of Arden in October.
