2011 Women's champions make a good start

KAY DALTON and Angela Paton put down an emphatic marker as they launched the defence of their women’s title in the Daily Mail Foursomes.
The pairing from the Three Rivers club in Essex lifted the women’s trophy at Marriott Dalmahoy last October when they beat Drayton Park’s Lynn Gray and Julia Gaunt 2&1 in the final.
And Kay and Angela were back to winning ways in this year’s first round as they eased to a far more decisive 7&6 victory over Rhona Pickering and Vanessa Adams from the Warren club in nearby Maldon.
Lynn and Julia, a former ladies professional and England international, will be looking to go one better this year, and they are also through to the second round after beating Anne McCulloch and Enid Butler from fellow Staffordshire club Brocton Hall by two holes.
Their progress is in stark contrast to what has happened in the men’s tournament, in which all four clubs who reached last year’s semi-finals went out in this year’s first round after a change of personnel.
Those successful in this year’s first round will have to make it through six more rounds to reach finals week, when the last 16 men’s and women’s pairings fight it out for the two trophies.
This year’s finals will be played at the Marriott Forest of Arden, in the West Midlands, during October.
