Fulford Heath men and Three Rivers Ladies triumph at 2011 Finals

Daily Mail
21 Oct 2011

MATTHEW BURGE gave up his job to appear at the Daily Mail Foursomes finals week - and was rewarded by lifting the trophy at Marriott Dalmahoy.
Matthew and Craig Birch, 27, from Fulford Heath, beat Wentworth’s Alan Healy and Alex Paramor, son of chief European Tour referee John Paramor, by one hole in a tense final.
The plant machine driver and Worcestershire county golfer, 31, said: ‘I had to hand in my notice because they would not give me the time off. I’m glad I did now.
‘I have been thinking of trying to be a PGA pro teacher, so maybe I will do that now.’
Matthew and Craig looked in control as they led by three holes going into the closing stages. But the Wentworth pair took them all the way to the 18th and it was left to Craig, who has been playing the game for only a little over two years, to hole a knee-knocking three-foot putt for victory at the last.
Alan and Alex will now join their Wentworth team-mates to contest the Mail on Sunday Classic finals.
The only way was Essex in the women’s tournament as Angela Paton and Kay Dalton, from the Three Rivers club near Chelmsford, shocked former ladies professional and England international Julia Gaunt (nee Hill), 45, and Lynn Gray, from Drayton Park, 2&1 in the final.
It would have perhaps been fitting for a former ladies professional to the lift the trophy at a former home of the Solheim Cup.
But the Three Rivers pair rushed into a three-hole lead after seven holes in the final. Julia and Lyn, though, showed their mettle to pull level on the back nine, only for Angela and Kay to ease ahead again.
It was another triumph for a relative rookie as Kay, 46, has been a member at Three Rivers for only two years.
A weather delay the previous day meant the finalists were decided by a morning foursomes stableford competition.
