Hall has unfinished business

Four players saw their hopes of an immediate return to finals week dashed as the Daily Mail Foursomes showpiece looms closer.

Father and son Malcolm and Daniel Cobb from Brokenhurst Manor, reached the quarter-finals at Marriott St Pierre last October. But their bid for a return to finals week was snuffed out by Alan Carpenter and Pat Lawson, who pulled off a one-hole victory at their Hockley Club. It was the fourth time Malcolm and Daniel had represented their club in the foursomes and the second time they had gone out in the fifth round.

Warren Dempster and Danny Butler, from the Calderfields club in Walsall, went even closer to a return to finals week. But they met their match in the sixth round at Fulford HEath, where Matthew Burge and Craig Birch triumphed 3&2. Matthew and Craig have to negotiate one more match and they will be in the finals in October.

Only Ian Hall still has a chance of making consecutive finals week. Ian and Maesteg team mate Andrew Llewellyn were knocked out by Marriott Dalmahoy's Steven Lees and Gary Tillbrook in the final 16 last time around. Now Ian, playhing this year with Richard Allen, has Marriott Dalmahoy in his sights again as finals week this year will be at the Edinburgh venue.

Ian and Richards made it into the sixth round with a 3&1 home victory over Pontardawe father and son team Alan and Shaun Lewis.
