Porthpean's long haul win

Jeremy Maude and Derek Williams took three days to pull off a record-equalling victory in the Daily Mail Foursomes' fifth round.

The pair from the Porthpean Club in St Austell started their match against Carlyon Bay brothers jason and Paul Gay at around 5pm on Friday - and finished it at about 3.45pm on the following Monday.
'We had played six extra holes and it just became too dark,' said Jeremy. 'So we decided to come back on the Monday.'

They finally closed the tie out with a par at the eighth extra hole, equalling the competition's longest match. Jeremy, 48, said: 'There were chances but none of them were taken. We decided to play the first and 18th as extra holes. A couple who let us through on the fourth hole also let us through on the 22nd. It was the first time I had been let through twice by the same couple.'

Their marathon fifth-round victory was the Porthpean's first home game actually played in this year's foursomes and by far their toughest. George Broadey and Steve Lamb, who visit in round six, will be hoping they do not have to make the 70-mile round trip from their China Fleet club more than once.

'I think we will tee off a bit earlier this time,' said Jeremy.
