Cleckheaton put an end to hopes for another Willow Valley double

Daily Mail

JOHN REDDY and Tom Branker, semi-finalists last year, bowed out of the Daily Mail Foursomes at the first hurdle this time around.
And the demise of the Willow Valley golfers highlighted the continuing strength of the world's larget golf competition.
Cleckheaton & District's Peter Fenton, who teamed up with Martin Gaffney to seal a 4&3 victory, is a former England international who won the Brabazon Trophy before taking a break from the game.
Willow Valley, a club near Brighouse which will host the 2013 Yorkshire PGA Championship, achieved the extraordinary feat of reaching the semi-finals of the men's and women's events last year.
Janet Tedstone and Linda Burnley are representing the club once more this year, and the former England cricket internationals got off the mark again with a 6&5 victory over Woodhall Hills' Christine Barker and Christine Sankey.
But Dorking's Neil Edeson and Peter Mitchell, who made the last 16 at Marriott St Pierre last year, also went out in this year's first round, beaten 2&1 by Gatton Manor's Mark Dawson and John Humphries.
Over 3,000 teams made it into the Daily Mail Foursomes first round from an original club entry of around 200,000. This year's finals will be at Marriott Dalmahoy, near Edinburgh, in October.
