West Byfleet stride on

Daily Mail
26 Jul 2010

GOLFING success seems to be second nature to Keith Waters.
As a professional, he survived for 17 years on the European Tour until 1995, playing for 15 of them without recourse to tour school.
Then he was responsible for the tour’s phenomenal development into Asia and Australasia after becoming their director of international growth. Now he has been promoted to the post of chief operating officer.
So, despite a seven-year gap in which he did not pick up a golf club, it is hardly surprising he is making a success of his forage into the Daily Mail Foursomes this year.
Keith and son Andrew, representing West Byfleet, progressed into the sixth round after a 5&4 victory over Ogbourne Downs’ Dick Solomon and Richard Bungey, which continued an impressive run of results for the Waters boys.
They have not been taken past the 15th hole in any of the four games they have played in the competition on their Surrey course, while their only away game, at Laleham in round two, ended in a 3&1 victory.
Keith, 52, said: ‘I really enjoy playing golf with my son. It can get stressful but on the whole it is good.
‘I did not play for six or seven years after starting to work for the tour and it was only when my son started playing that I joined him. We won the club foursomes to get into the Daily Mail, and it would be great now to get to the finals.’
Despite victory in the Zimbabwe Open, Keith says his best result on tour was a second-placed finish to Seve Ballesteros at the British Masters at Woburn in 1991.
Andrew, 22, is in the fourth year of a degree course in chemical engineering at Bath University so will not have to go far if he reaches finals week, just across the Welsh border at Marriott St Pierre.
But they still have two rounds to negotiate before then, and that could prove a more difficult road to travel.
