Finals hosts Marriott St Pierre knocked out by Llanwern

MARRIOTT ST PIERRE'S hopes of contributing more than the venue at this year's finals week were ended by two defeats within a matter of days in the fourth round.
Club captain Graham Smith, an international rally driver in the 1970s, and Jim Campbell crashed out in a 6&4 defeat at Llanwern while immediate past lady captain Barbara Riding and Hilary Hillier lost the last three holes to finish one down at the Wiltshire club.
Graham, 59, said: 'We looked at it at the start of the year and thought, “It would be great to get all the way to the final, with it being on our home course”. So there is an obvious disappointment.
'But, as captain, I will still be there watching and making sure people are comfortable.'
Both the men's and women's pairings looked impressive as they made it through the first three rounds. But the fourth wasn't with them as Graham and Jim failed to find their A game against Gary Lloyd and Chris Powell at neighbouring Llanwern, while water trouble contributed to Barbara and Hilary giving up a two-hole lead with three to play against Maureen Turner and Elaine Wheeler at the Wiltshire club.
Graham said: 'If you win the first three rounds, you start to think you can get somewhere. But the Daily Mail is probably the biggest tournament of its type at club level, so you know you are likely to come up against someone good if you progress, and Gary and Chris were a formidable pair.'
Now Graham and Jim will be hoping to progress in the national seniors pairs knockout competition, having reached the third round, while Barbara and Hilary have another commitment to look forward to in October.
They will be helping with merchandising when Wales hosts the Ryder Cup for the first time 15 miles up the road from Marriott St Pierre.
