Cheshire big guns match sees Stockport win

Daily Mail
24 May 2010

DAVID PEEL was the one celebrating after three of Cheshire's big guns clashed in the third round of the Daily Mail Foursomes.
David, who represents Stockport, and Hazel Grove pair Mark Rogers and Andrew Hill have run up around 300 appearances for Cheshire between them. David, 35, is a former county matchplay and strokeplay champion while Mark, 36, and Andrew 49, are former county foursomes champions.
David, who still plays for Cheshire, and Mark both have homes in the same apartment block in Hazel Grove, but David turns right to go to Stockport while Mark turns left to play at Hazel Grove.
And it was David who was heading in the right direction in the Daily Mail Foursomes after he and retired Ken Dargie combined to triumph at Hazel Grove.
David, a former British Mid-Amateur semi-finalist, said: 'I have played with them and played against them many times. I used to travel around with Mark to play tournaments, so it was a bit of a grudge match and it was a nice one to win.'
It didn't look like being that way when the Stockport pair trailed by two holes with two to play. But they won the 17th with a shot before David holed a birdie putt at the 18th to send the game into extra time. David, whose father, Mike, has just retired as the professional at Stockport, and Ken closed out victory at the first extra hole.
Mark and Andrew made it all the way to finals week at Saunton in 1994, when they reached the last 16. But they have still to match the feat, despite qualifying to represent Hazel Grove on no fewer than seven occasions since.
Now they will have to wait at least another year for a chance to do so.
