Whitburn beat England Golf Team Captain to go through

Daily Mail
24 May 2010

Faye Sanderson, who captained the England Girls' golf team to success in the home internationals last year, had her hopes of reaching the Daily Mail Foursomes' finals at Marriott St Pierre ended in the third round.
Faye and Janet Ross, from the Heworth club in Gateshead, were beaten 5&4 by Whitburn's Chloe Taylor and Thelma Beaney.
It was the second time in as many years that lightning had struck in the same place for the Heworth pair, who were also beaten at Whitburn last year, by pensioners Anne Dunn and Vivienne Atkinson.
England's footballers will be hoping they don't give away as many free shots as Faye was forced to do against unfancied opponents, of course.
But that's the joy of the foursomes. The handicap system means the average club golfer can take on the best and, if they really play above themselves, some will even be able to say: 'I beat the England captain'.
At least Faye lasted longer in the competition than County Durham team-mate and rival Louise Richardson and Wales international Hannah Jenkins.
Louise, who reached the quarter-finals at the Marriott Forest of Arden last year along with Durham City partner Sandra Maxwell, lost 2&1 to Maureen Wigham and Doreen Wallace in this year's second round at Brancepeth Castle.
Hannah, a member of the Wales side which won the home internationals 12 months before Faye's England success, and Cradoc partner Margaret Jones were beaten at the same stage, 3&1 to Caroline Jones and Jan Bowen at Summerhill.
