ALASTAIR TROW holes in one to win for Wyre Forest

ALASTAIR TROW found the perfect way to close out his second-round match in the Daily Mail Foursomes and turn himself into a racing cert at Ludlow.
Alastair and Lee Robinson, from Wyre Forest, arrived at the 17th hole of their game against James Russell and Mark Rogers two up with two to play – and Alastair promptly holed his tee shot to clinch a 3&1 victory.
Alastair, 49, said: 'It was quite something. The 17th hole is a par three, over 190 yards long and, because we had won the last hole, I teed off first. I hit a little three iron and said “that looks close”. Then it was “oh goodness, it's gone in”.'
It was the third time Alastair had achieved a hole in one, having done so at his previous club, Halesowen as well as at Wyre Forest about three years ago.
But there was no doubt which one was the most special.
He said: 'This one was very nice because it was so important to us as a match. We had never played the Ludlow course before and to win it like that made it even better.
'Lee was ecstatic. He was by the green with James waiting to play the next shot and so saw everything. He was jumping up and down when it went in and, to be fair, I think James was just as pleased.
'My opponent didn't bother playing his tee shot. He just gave me a big hug and said it was a nice way for me to win.'
The friendly way their opponents conducted themselves left its mark on Alastair. He said: 'We did not know their course at all and, because it is in the middle of Ludlow racecourse, there are a lot of different local rules. They would tell us things like where to aim, and without that we would have been lost.'
Now the Wyre Forest pairing will be hoping their good fortune will continue through all seven rounds before finals week is played out at Marriott St Pierre in October.
However, Alastair, who plays off 11, added: 'I do not believe in luck.'
