Disruptions in second round

Daily Mail

VOLCANIC ash is still casting a cloud over the Daily Mail Foursomes, with players stranded abroad missing the deadline for second-round matches.

Frances Millar will not be able to fly back from Colorado until Thursday, and that has forced her and Claire Penman, from Carnoustie Caledonia, to give Royal Montrose's Tricia Cresdee and Liz McCaw a walkover into the next round.

That denied club champion and Angus county player Claire, 26, the chance to add a place in the Daily Mail Foursomes finals to her appearance in Sun City for the finals of the AEG Tournment this year.

Both of Deer Park's players were left high and dry by the ban on flights into the country. Cath Anderson, 45, was stuck in Amsterdam airport for five days with daughter Sarah, 15, and son Andrew, 13, after a stop-off on her way back from seeing friends in Portland, Oregon, before organising a series of bus, train and ferry trips to get back to Edinburgh.

Christine Clark, 60, spent an extra week with sister Elaine and friend Evelyn in Estepona on the Costa del Sol before a 12-hour drive by hire to Santander, an 18-hour ferry trip to Plymouth and a 10-hour drive by another hire car to pick up her car in Glasgow.

Christine, who reached the last 16 of the foursomes with partner Irene Adams at the Marriott Forest of Arden two years ago, said: 'It was quite an adventure but one I hope I don't have to go through again.

It left their proposed second-round opponents Carole Mason and Heather Porter, of Marriott Dalmahoy, in the fortunate position of reaching round three without having to hit a ball, having already received a bye in the first round.

Now they will be hoping to cash in on their good fortune by going all the way to finals week at their sister course, Marriott St Pierre, in October.

The men's event was not as badly hit by the volcanic ash scare as the deadline for their second-round matches is not until next Monday.
