Successful start for Steve

STEVE SIDNEY'S long-running bid to recapture the Daily Mail Foursomes trophy has been given extra incentive by the choice of this season's finals venue.

Steve and Nigel Knight put the name of Queens Park on the trophy as long ago as 1997 at Royal Porthcawl.

It took eventual champions Ian Donaldson and Stephen Smith, of Beacon Park, to end his interest in last year's event after he and Matt Doughty had made it all the way to finals week at the Marriott Forest of Arden.

Now he has made a successful start this year with new Queens Park partner Jeff Roberts – and he already has his eye on finals week at Marriott St Pierre.

Steve, 45, said: 'It would be lovely to go back. We had a great time last year and met some great people. I love the event – and I also think St Pierre owes me one.'

Steve, Nigel and fellow Queens Park members Kevin Turner and Tony Sword missed out on the prize of a trip to the Bahamas in another national competition played at the Chepstow venue only on countback... after Nigel had missed a two-foot putt on the last hole.

Steve and Jeff, who won the Derbyshire county championship around 30 years ago, began this year's foursomes with a one-hole win over Andy Cuddy and Pete Cook at nearby Bournemouth course Canford Magna.

But they gave up a two-hole lead with five to play, and only their opponents losing a ball at the last presented them with a passage through.

Steve said: 'We don't need too many as close as that because otherwise we won't have any finger nails left. But you need a lot of luck along the way to do well in this competition. We went to extra holes a couple of times last year but managed to get the job done.'
