Record entry in 2010

ANOTHER record-breaking season in the Daily Mail Foursomes has teed off, with over 3,000 pairings entering this year's competition.

Over, 1,700 pairings have entered the women's event, the largest number since Irish teams left to play in their own competition, while almost 1,500 pairings will contest the men's event.

A host of former winners, leading amateurs and would-be professionals will be battling to represent their club's at this year's finals week at Marriott St Pierre in October.

But the Daily Mail Foursomes would not be the competition it is without the participation of thousands of club members – from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

One player who falls into the latter category is Gordon Simpson, who will represent Scottish club Caird Park this year at the age of 83.

Gordon, who plays around four times a week, is the Dundee club's senior champion and qualified to represent the club in the foursomes by winning their qualifying competition with Lindsay Robertson, 56. They have been given a bye in the first round but will still have to win another six rounds to make finals week – for the last 16 men's and women's pairings – at the Chepstow venue.

One former winner who won't be there is Sandy Lodge's Moira Sleeman, who won the women's title with Lesley Diamond in 2007. Moira experienced the foursomes' capricious nature when, playing with her new partner from the Hertfordshire club, Lesley Mulley, she was beaten 5&3 in this year's first round by Emma Goss and Teresa Jordan at Bushey Hall.

The Championship Old Course Pierre was remodelled in 2008 as part of £6million investment in the estate and now is over 7,000 yards long.
