Queens Park pair through to Finals

Daily Mail
22 Sep 2009

STEVE SIDNEY is daring to dream again of Daily Mail Foursomes success 12 years after lifting the men’s trophy.

Steve, 43, and Nigel Knight put the name of Bournemouth club Queens Park on the trophy at Royal Porthcawl in 1997. But, despite qualifying to represent the club in all but three seasons since, Steve has struggled to make it past the early rounds.

Now, however, he is enjoying probably his best run since winning the event after reaching the third round with new partner Matt Doughty. Steve said: ‘I am keen to do well again because I know what the end result is and what a prestigious event this is. But there is still a long way to go. ‘It is such a long-winded affair that it is very hard to win every round. It is just one of those tournaments where you have to keep your fingers crossed and hope the luck goes with you on the day.’

Steve still has fond memories of his foursomes success. ‘I remember the weekend really well,’ he said. ‘It was lovely weather, we played really well, obviously, and the Daily Mail looked after us really well. ‘We had three wives with us - my wife Cathy, Nigel’s wife Liz, and our caddie John Challen’s wife Tracey - and everyone kept saying “oh, here come the Spice Girls”.’ Any chance of a Spice Girls reunion was dashed by a knee operation which Nigel needed, so Matt has stepped up to the plate in fine style.

The Queens Park pair, who earned the right to represent the club by winning their scratch foursomes event, were one under par gross for their round when they closed out a 4&3 victory over Burley’s Bill Collinge and Kevin Rickman on the 15th green in round two.
