Thirsty for glory at the 19th

Mike Hughes and Terry Parkinson of Preston
Daily Mail
30 Jun 2009

SHOULD their wives accuse Mike Hughes or Terry Parkinson of spending too much time at the 19th hole, they have every right to say: 'Don't blame us — it's the Daily Mail's fault.'

The Preston pair won through to the fourth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes, having been taken to the first extra hole in each of their games so far. They fought back from three down early on to win at Fishwick Hall in the first round, then, after receiving a bye in round two, pulled back another three-hole deficit to beat Ashton & Lea's Paul Bartlett and Terry Richards on their home course last time out.

In fact, the Preston pair obviously believe in doing things the hard way, having been three down with four holes to play in the final of their club's qualifying competition.

Preston hold a special place in the fabric of the Daily Mail Foursomes, having been the first winners of the competition through Jeff Beswick and Tom Bitcliffe after records started to be kept in 1964. They are also the home of Iris Brattan, who won the women's trophy in 1991 with Anne Baines and in 2003 with Chris Appleby.

Mike, 60, said: 'People are interested in our progress because they know the club have had a couple of successes in the competition. People are well aware of it, and I know have been looking on the website to see how things are going.'

Now Mike, a retired chemistry lecturer, is hoping he and Terry, 60 in July, have the right formula to emulate their predecessors in the competition. He said: 'We are certainly going to do our best. We have played some good golf and we have had some luck. With the handicap system, I do not see any reason why we cannot keep winning.'
